The Role

Equestrian Canada (EC) is the national governing body for equestrian sport and industry in Canada, with a mandate to represent, promote and advance all equine and equestrian interests. With over 18,000 sport licence holders, 90,000 registered participants, 11 provincial/territorial sport organization partners and 10+ national equine affiliate organizations, EC is a significant contributor to the social, physical, emotional, and economic well-being of the equestrian industry across Canada.

The Manager, Sport Development will support the design, oversee the development, and lead the implementation and delivery of designated sport development programs that enables Long Term Equestrian Development, to advance Equestrian Canada’s (EC) objectives of creating a sustainable Equestrian sport system that drives growth and athlete development.

Overview

The Manager, Sport Development leads EC’s Sport Development Team, which is responsible for ensuring national standards through the development and monitoring of education programs for coaches, officials, event organizers and facility operators. EC’s Sport Development Team work in partnership with Provincial/Territorial Sport Organizations (PTSOs) and other sport system partners to develop and implement sport initiation and athlete development programs to be delivered by these same stakeholders.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Oversee Sport Initiation and Education Programs (45%)

  • Oversee education programs that support the learning and development of equestrian community leaders, coaches, officials, athletes in the FUNdamentals, Learn to Train, Train to Train, Active and Competitive for Life; collaborate with High Performance in programs for to Learn to Compete and Train to Compete; and support EC’s High Performance Team in the creation of programs in Learn to Win and Train to Win stages of development.
  • Develop a multi-year plan to revise program curricula resulting in an aligned Long Term Equestrian Development (LTED) Framework.
  • Oversee the delivery and lead the enhancement of EC education program offerings and products via EC’s Learning Management system, the ECampus, and associated platforms.
  • Support EC Staff leads responsible for Safe Sport implementation with the review, maintenance and updating of policies and procedures related to safe sport in areas associated with sport development.

Lead Coach Development Programming (30%)

  • Lead and support designated subject experts and staff leads with the ongoing renewal, revision and development of NCCP programs, and the move towards blended learning, including revision of program policies and delivery standards.
  • Work with the Coaching Association of Canada and subject matter experts to review, update and streamline NCCP training and certification pathways and offerings.
  • In collaboration with Provincial and Territorial Sport Organizations (PTSOs) work to establish processes to ensure coaches meet agreed minimum training and certification standards.
  • Develop a framework and identify the resources necessary to support the on-going professional development and education of identified coaches leading in order to increase the number of talented Coach Developers and Master Coach Developers.

Manage Staff Team and Finances (25%)

  • Develop and lead the department with the expertise necessary to facilitate appropriate culture and strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with Director, Sport Operations to establish and manage annual operating budget according to organizational priorities.
  • Write grant applications/funding submission and/or engage with specialist Grant writers.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Understanding of instructional design, experience with the delivery of online education in a variety of formats.
  • Strong knowledge of practical horsemanship.
  • High level of proficiency with Zoom, Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, experience with a variety of online collaboration and education tools.
  • Project Management Professional designation or 5 + years of project management experience in the workplace.
  • Bilingual French/English essential A combination of relevant skills, experience, and education will be considered.

Job Requirements

  • On condition of the offer, applicants will be required to be complete EC Level 3 screening in accordance with the organization’s screening policy – Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Successful completion of EC safe sport training and other employee training is required.
  • If not already qualified, candidate will be expected to complete the core training for NCCP Coach Developers through their PTCR.
  • 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday; however, work in the evening and weekends will be required from time to time when supporting live training events.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, permanent role. The EC office is based out of Ottawa, Ontario, but operations are performed remotely. Normal business hours at EC are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (ET), Monday through Friday; however, as an organization involved in sport, some night and weekend work may be required.
