Job Summary

The Director of Development is a senior fundraising leader responsible for driving new major gift relationships across Canada in support of the Canadian Paralympic Movement.

This growth-focused role centers on new donor acquisition and securing transformational gifts ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000+. The successful candidate will expand the Foundation’s network of high-capacity donors, support the Executive Director and Board in strategic relationship development, and personally manage a portfolio of key prospects while building a strong pipeline of large, complex gifts.

The role includes one direct report, the Major Gifts Officer, who supports pipeline development and moves management through prospect research, donor qualification, and proposal development.

While this position is primarily focused on cultivating new relationships and closing significant gifts, it will work collaboratively with team members responsible for stewardship and annual giving to ensure a cohesive, integrated donor experience.

Location: Remote within Canada, with travel to Ottawa (CPC office) and other locations
Employment type: Full-time
Salary: $110,000-$145,000 annually plus benefits

Key Responsibilities

Major Gift Acquisition and Revenue Growth

  • Build and manage a personal portfolio of high-capacity prospects nationally
  • Secure gifts in the $50K–$1M+ range
  • Develop and execute customized cultivation and solicitation strategies

New Relationship Development

  • Identify and qualify new high-net-worth individuals, family foundations, and aligned philanthropists
  • Leverage internal networks and community connections to generate new leads
  • Grow the Foundation’s prospect pipeline in a meaningful way
  • Provide strategic support to the Executive Director in donor engagement
  • Prepare high-level briefing materials and cultivation plans

Complex and Planned Giving Strategy

Lead the development and growth of advanced giving vehicles, including:

  • Legacy and bequest giving, gifts of publicly traded securities, endowment gifts and endowment-building strategies, life insurance policies, donor-advised funds, and other tax-efficient, structured giving vehicles
  • Develop internal processes and policies for complex gifts
  • Work with the Major Gifts Officer to create donor-facing materials that explain sophisticated giving options

Team Leadership

  • Supervise Major Gift Officer (research and proposal development focus)
  • Oversee prospect research, pipeline development, and proposal production
  • Foster a performance-driven and collaborative culture

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven success in securing major gifts ($50K–$1M+) and building new donor pipelines
  • Working proficiency in both official languages, with experience communicating and delivering results in English and French, is required.
  • Ability to engage and support senior leaders and board members in high-level donor conversations
  • Strong knowledge of complex and tax-efficient giving, including securities, endowments, bequests, life insurance, and donor-advised funds
  • Experience managing revenue targets, budgets, and prospect pipelines
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English and French
  • A strategic, relationship-driven mindset with high integrity and discretion
  • CFRE accreditation would be considered an asset

Experience

  • 7+ years of progressive fundraising experience, with a focus on major gifts
  • Demonstrated success in securing five- and six-figure gifts; experience with seven-figure gifts would be an asset
  • Experience building and qualifying new donor pipelines, not solely managing existing portfolios
  • Experience working closely with senior executives and board members
  • Experience supervising fundraising staff or leading cross-functional teams

Working Conditions

  • Remote work environment, with the successful candidate working primarily from within Canada and attending the office as needed.
  • The CPC head office is currently located in Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Staff based outside Ottawa will be expected to travel to Ottawa a few times each year, or as required by the role.
  • Overnight and international travel, as well as off-site work, will be required (for example, for Games, site visits, events, and meetings).
  • Evening and weekend work will be required during busy periods, including Games and other special events.
