The Dinos in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director, High Performance Sport and Student Services.

The Associate Director, Sport and Student Services reports to the Director of Athletics, Faculty of Kinesiology, with oversight responsibility for high-performance sport (varsity and club teams) and student-athlete-focused programming including athletic therapy, sports science, eligibility/compliance, and academic support. The position is full time at 35 hours/week. Evenings and weekends are required on a seasonal basis as much of the programming activity occurs during non-office hours.

The University of Calgary Athletic Department supports 23 varsity teams and eight competitive clubs. A unit within the Faculty of Kinesiology, Dinos Athletics competes within the Canada West conference and U SPORTS. Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Athletic Therapy & Sport Science

  • Provide overall leadership, management, and budget accountability of an integrated sports science model for Athletics. Direct reports include full-time athletic therapy professionals and the head Strength and Conditioning Coach. This individual will be the primary Athletics liaison with the Sports Medicine Centre. They are responsible for building a program of trusted sport science practitioners who support student-athlete and coach holistic health and development
  • This individual works closely with the Faculty of Kinesiology to support research priorities that are mutually beneficial to student athletes, coaches, and teams

Varsity and Competitive Club Programs

  • Direct oversight of varsity and competitive club sport programming, including the management of all staff in assigned sports. Specific sport oversight to be confirmed based on incumbent’s skills and experience
  • In addition, the associate director will ensure that clubs and student-athletes abide by the Dinos code of conduct and all other applicable university policies and procedures. Direct reports include employee, contractor, and volunteer coaches
  • Together with the Director, develop, implement, and evaluate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as part of an annual evaluation framework for varsity and club sport programs
  • Facilitate the development of annual and long-term plans with sport coaches, including annual professional development planning with coaches
  • Annually solicit student-athlete feedback and evaluation
  • Establish and reinforce a culture of collaboration and continuous development amongst coaches and sport science staff.

Eligibility, Compliance, Admissions & Registration

  • Provide leadership on eligibility, compliance, and all other academic processes within the athletic department. Primary liaison with Enrolment Services for admissions and registration issues for student-athletes. Direct reports include full-time Athlete Services Coordinator

Academic Support

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Dinos GPS academic support program for student-athletes.

Risk Management

  • Athletics contact with Risk Management, ensuring correct processes and policies are in place and procedures are followed for all Athletics-related activity including travel, volunteer registration, environment health and safety, and other related areas

Safe Sport

  • Primary intake contact for Safe Sport-related issues. At all times, promote the values of Safe Sport and create a safe, inclusive, athlete-centered environment within sport programs

Budget and Administration

  • Accountable for assigned budget, including annual budgeting, tracking, and forecasting. Responsible to ensure university administrative procedures and timelines, including HR, finance, expense, travel, etc., are adhered to

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • The incumbent will posses a University degree in kinesiology/physical education, sport business, sport management (master’s degree preferred), or a related field, and have a minimum of 10 years of related experience in high-performance and/or post-secondary sport
  • Previous experience in high-performance coaching would be an asset
  • Successful experience in personnel and budget management
  • Highly skilled and knowledgeable in the design and delivery of sport programming and work with high-performance coaches
  • Strong communications, facilitation, negotiation, and customer service skills are required to resolve sensitive issues in an environment of continuous change and shifting responsibilities.
  • High degree of problem solving skills and the ability to conduct oneself in a positive professional manner in stressful situations
  • Must posses good judgment, be tactful and diplomatic, possess superior written and verbal communications skills, and demonstrate strong leadership abilities
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary systems and policies and procedures is an asset
